The Benefits of Merino Wool
Why Choose Merino Wool?
100% pure merino wool is truly nature’s wonder fibre. No synthetic fabric will ever match the look, feel and performance of this fabric. Some of the purest merino wool in the world is grown right here on the rolling hills of Australia and New Zealand. Merino wool comes from the fleece of merino sheep, a breed of sheep famous for its soft, fine wool. It is a 100% natural fibre grown in both the cool alpine country as well as a hot, dry planes across New Zealand and Australia.
About Merino Sheep
These merino sheep are able to endure a range of extreme climates from snow and freezing conditions of the Southern Alps in New Zealand to the hot, dry conditions of Queensland, Australia. Their wool allows them warmth in the winter and will help to keep them cool in the summer.
Unique only to merino, is its ability to regulate body temperature and absorb and release moisture. Similar to when the fibre is on the sheep's back – this allows it to cool your baby when they become hot and warm your baby when they become cold. The fibres essentially create the perfect microclimate around your child's body. Merino wool will provide protection in ways synthetic fibres, such as polyester, cannot.
Merino Wool's Amazing Properties
We promise you, you will love your Sweet Cheeks. Here's why!
Breathable, heat regulating & moisture wicking
Merino is a naturally breathable fabric as it is able to trap small air pockets between the fibres. This is what allows the wool to regulate heat and moisture flow to and from the body, protecting the body’s microclimate in changing conditions. Merino can hold up to 30% of its weight in moisture before it begins to feel damp to the touch.
Fire safe & UV protective
Merino wool is self extinguishing meaning in the event of a fire it won’t melt or stick to the skin. It puts itself out if exposed to heat or flame.
Merino fibres are also resistant to harmful UV radiation.
Sweet Cheek's super fine knit merino is typically 19 micron (in comparison, a human hair is 50 micron). Due to the fineness of the wool it has natural elastic properties meaning it is very stretchy and a silky soft feel making it lovely to put against delicate skin. It stretches with your child’s movements yet always retaining its original shape. This makes it so comfortable to wear. It feels like a second skin. Merino has also been linked with lowering skin allergies.
Because merino wool fibres are so fine, when woven together, they naturally produce a lightweight fabric. Merino provides an excellent warmth to weight ratio, meaning you can layer multiple merino items for ultimate warmth and not have that bulky, unable to move feeling.
Our merino is extremely fine spun making it super soft and comfortable.
The fabric is odour resistant meaning that it does not require to be washed as often as other fabrics such as polyester or cotton. Often just hanging your Sweet Cheeks out to air will be enough to have it smelling fresh again.
Busy parents do not have the time for hand washing.
All our products are machine washable on either the gentle or wool cycle.
You must use wool detergent and do not soak or bleach your items as holes will develop. This includes loading up the washing machine, adding in your washing powder on top and leaving it to sit before turning on (a problem with top-loader machines). The detergent can burn through fabric if left on it!
Merino fabric will also dry a lot faster than other fabrics. But if you are unable to hang your clothes out on the line, they can also be tumbled dried on a cool setting.
Merino fibres are strong and long, this helps to create a durable fabric that is less likely to pill as well as having excellent drape and wrinkle recovery.
